Last week, I had the opportunity to speak at two AI events covering two sides of the same transformation.
At CYSEC GLOBAL , the discussion focused on AI and cybersecurity—how AI can strengthen IT and OT security, but also how greater AI autonomy creates new risks.
At the Middle East Enterprise AI & Analytics Summit , the discussion focused on AI in manufacturing: reality versus hype.
Both events reinforced one conclusion for me:
AI success should not be measured by how many tools we deploy, but by the measurable business value we create—and how securely and responsibly we create it.
Safety Must Come First
In manufacturing, safety is not just another KPI—it is fundamental.
AI can play an important role in improving safety by helping organizations detect abnormal equipment behavior, identify unsafe conditions, predict failures, monitor operational risks, and support faster decisions.
But this also means we must be very careful about how AI is used in industrial environments.
When AI interacts with machinery, production systems, or operational technology, we are not only talking about data or efficiency. In some cases, we are talking about human lives.
That is why critical decisions involving safety, machinery, shutdowns, and operational risk should always be designed with strong governance, validation, cybersecurity, and appropriate human oversight.
The objective should not be maximum autonomy.
It should be responsible autonomy.
Real AI in Manufacturing Means Changing the KPIs
The second important point is about separating AI reality from AI hype.
For me, the real test of AI in manufacturing is very simple:
Is AI changing the company’s KPIs?
If AI is not improving measurable business performance, then it may still be an interesting technology—but it is not yet delivering real transformation.
AI should ultimately contribute to improvements in areas such as:
Productivity, quality, downtime, safety, inventory, energy consumption, cost, delivery performance, and customer responsiveness.
This is where the real value is.
A successful AI project should not finish with a presentation saying, “We implemented AI.”
It should finish with measurable evidence such as:
less downtime, better quality, lower waste, improved safety, faster delivery, or reduced cost.
That is the difference between AI adoption and AI impact.
From Isolated AI to Connected Intelligence
The bigger opportunity comes when AI can connect information across ERP, supply chain, maintenance, MES, SCADA, machines, sensors, and operational systems.
At that point, AI moves beyond isolated analysis and starts to understand the end-to-end impact of events and decisions.
We are also moving quickly from AI assistants to AI agents capable of interpreting context, using enterprise systems, and taking action.
That creates enormous potential—but also increases the importance of cybersecurity, governance, safety, and human accountability.
My key takeaway from both events is therefore:
Data + AI + Integration + Cybersecurity + Safety + Human Judgment = Real Transformation
The future is not about AI replacing people.
It is about creating organizations where human experience and artificial intelligence work together securely, safely, responsibly, and productively.
And in manufacturing, the proof will not be in how advanced the AI looks.
The proof will be in the KPIs it changes.
