Rising Pressures: AI, Wearables, and Security

Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and wearable health sensors bring enormous potential-but also introduce new layers of complexity. "AI can streamline diagnostics, personalize treatment, and reduce administrative overhead, but it also brings risks like algorithm bias, data overload, and regulatory uncertainty," explains Mark Hidalgo, CIO of a major teaching hospital. "CIOs are now responsible for not only deploying AI tools but also ensuring they are ethical, secure, and clinically validated." The rise of Internet of Medical Things (IoMT)-including wearable monitors, smart implants, and remote sensors-adds to the CIO's burden. These devices create vast volumes of real-time data and increase the surface area for cyberattacks. Yet, many are managed by biomedical or clinical engineering departments outside IT, leaving gaps in visibility and control. In this expanding threat landscape, cybersecurity has become a top priority. Ransomware attacks on hospitals are on the rise, and connected medical devices represent a growing vulnerability. CIOs must now work closely with CISOs, legal teams, and external regulators to ensure compliance and resilience.

Breaking Silos and Building Collaboration

To meet these demands, some health systems are redefining the CIO role or adding complementary positions like Chief Digital Officer (CDO) or Chief Health Innovation Officer (CHIO). Others are expanding the CIO's scope to include biomedical engineering, analytics teams, and clinical informatics. Interdisciplinary governance models are also emerging as a solution. Cross-functional councils-uniting IT, clinical, operational, and biomedical leaders-are becoming essential for aligning priorities, approving technologies, and ensuring security standards.

The Future: Integrated, Intelligent, and Secure

Looking ahead, the success of healthcare CIOs will be defined not just by their technological expertise, but by their ability to unify departments, protect patient data, and champion innovation across silos. "The modern CIO is no longer just an IT expert-they are a digital integrator, a security strategist, and a clinical ally," says Foster. "And in a world of AI, wearables, and escalating threats, that role is more critical than ever." To unlock the promise of digital healthcare, organizations must empower CIOs with broader oversight, clearer governance, and the tools to lead confidently into the next era of intelligent, secure care delivery.
